There Are Always New Things to Learn

You might get frustrated during your job search, but here are a few suggestions of things you can do to help you learn new skills and information while looking for a job. Find new skills employers will value and sharpen up skills regarding things you already know. Notice all my suggestions have a networking twist.

Attend classes or workshops.

Take a class or workshop that is relevant to your field to help bolster your résumé and make yourself more valuable to future employers. Introduce yourself to as many people as possible in the class or workshop and seek out someone who seems particularly knowledgeable about the topic. Ask them to help mentor you and share some of their insider knowledge. Don’t forget to connect with the instructor or group leader, as well. Also, consider taking classes or workshops outside of your industry that will make you more diverse and introduce you to a new group of people.

Research and learn new things online.

Almost any employer will value your ability to research. Gen Y has practically grown up with search engines, and employers will expect you to know how to find things quickly. Another good place to soak up some knowledge is by participating in a webinar. By being in a webinar, you can interact with others no matter their location. One time I interviewed for a position and the next day, I participated in a webinar with the employers who interviewed me. I got the job, and I bet it didn’t hurt that they saw me participating and learning online.

Listen then talk.

Someone I admire said, “Good learners first learn to be great listeners. Great learners then teach what they have learned and deepen their understanding by doing so.” Set up an RSS reader and follow people you admire on Twitter and LinkedIn to see what information they are sharing. Then pitch in and contribute to the conversation by sharing what you have learned. The best way to meet new people and potential employers online is to share content that provides value to them.
